Q: True or False? To be effective at leadership you need to allow your people to do whatever they feel like while working on an important project.

A: False. This is actually not even close to what makes an effective leader. What you need to do is get everyone on the same page, delegate the different steps of the project to the individuals who are the most qualified, and them make sure it all gets done properly. But don’t be afraid to be an active participant in the project yourself. People are much more prone to follow a leader that is willing to get his or her hands dirty then they are to someone who just barks orders and sits back and waits for them to get accomplished. So, if you want to be a great leader, do everything you expect others to do, and be who you expect others to be.

Q: True or False? One of the traits of leadership is getting others to WANT to do the things you believe NEED to be done.

A: True. This is so important from a leadership perspective. Like I said earlier. Everyone has their own views and ideas of what needs to be done on a project. But you need one person to factor all possible options, take the most important ones and have them be put into action. If you have your entire group discuss your conclusions together, and come to the most logical ways of getting them accomplished, then you will have a room full of people who want to work together to achieve the same goals. This is the optimal outcome in a situation such as this one. Who doesn’t like team unity and cohesiveness? This is win-win for all parties involved.

A: True. But there is more to this than meets the eye. The above qualities are definitely important, but you can’t expect people to do things for you that you aren’t willing to do yourself. Here’s a prime example.
Say something comes up that needs to be taken care of immediately, and you are going to need people to burn the midnight oil in order to complete the task at hand. What do you think will motive these individuals to want to stay late and get the job done?

a) You tell them about the problem, force them to stay late and work while you bail out on them at your regular quitting time.


b) You tell them about the problem, ask them to stay late with you and plow head first into the task that needs to be accomplished.

My Quest In Finding Out About Leadership And The Qualities Required To Be An Effective Leader

Many people have asked the questions “What is Leadership,” and “What are the qualities of an effective leader?” I certainly know that I have. I was so intrigued by these questions that I went on mission of sorts to find out the answers. After speaking with many of today’s business leaders on a local and national level, the following are what seem to be common among all of the individuals that I spoke to. Let’s begin.

The first, and what appears to be mandatory for excellence in leadership, is the ability to get a group of people to see things from the same perspective. What I mean by this is simple, really.

Say you are at work and your company has a major project that is due in a short amount of time. Now, every individual in that group is going to have their own ideas about what needs to be done, the order of when certain things need to be done, and how they need to be done. The larger the group, the more complicated this scenario becomes.

So it falls to the leader to not only get everyone organized and on the same page, he or she should even try and get them to think it was their idea. Then they will be happy and work faster and more efficiently. How doesn’t want that? You’ll never catch me complaining about this situation. No way.

Another fantastic attribute in a quality leader is to be someone who is willing to do any and every job that you ask your fellow employees or contemporary’s to do. In a war, who do you think these soldiers would rather follow? A General that sends his people into dangerous situations while he hangs back out of harm’s way, or a General who sends his people into harm’s way, but is right there next to them leading the charge. Do I really even need to answer this question. It seems like a no brainer to me. I’d follow the General who is willing to fight and die with me to the ends of the earth. I might not follow the other General at all. In business, you need to the General right there in the trenches with his or her people, bleeding and fighting to get the job done.

And finally, the last thing I’d like to touch upon is longevity and leadership. Some leaders believe that just because they’ve been in a position of power for a long period of time it makes them a great and effective leader. Unfortunately for them this really isn’t the case. The only thing I can see that it makes them is lucky. That’s about it. Many people have gotten lucky in life, or their timing happened to be perfect for the situation they were in. But when the smoke clears, if you do not develop effective leadership skills, you team and/or organization will end up suffering greatly, and ultimately end up closing its door. Quality leadership is just that important.

What is leadership? And what makes leadership effective? If you ask a variety of people this question you’ll probably end up getting a whole host of answers. That’s why it’s a good idea for you to define exactly what is leadership to you so you know what is most important so you can focus on that specific issue.

Well this should be a good way for you to recognize that becoming effective at leadership is a skill that you can own and is not necessarily some God-given trait that you could never possess. As long as you are willing to put in the time and effort, then you can become a very effective leader whenever you please. You can choose and take your group or organization to the next level by giving them proper guidance so they can achieve greatness.

Another thing that I believe defines a great leader and effective leadership is when the person in charge has the ability to get the most out of all of the people and resources that he or she has to work with. Because a lot of the time an organization will have very limited resources and big dreams and it takes a charismatic and effective leader to make things happen and get things done properly and effectively.

If you have a leader in place that is committed to you and to getting good results than that’s a very good recipe for your organization to be able to succeed and reach its maximum potential.

In conclusion, when asked the pressing question “what is leadership”, I’d have to say that leadership is derived from exactly how effective a leader can be. And an effective leader has to possess all of the qualities that we’ve talked about above. Without those qualities a leader will probably not be as effective as one who possesses them all. There are many possible definitions for the word leadership, and they are all valid in their own right. But as far as definitions are concerned, here is my take on what is leadership.

The first thing I think of when I think of leadership is when a person or persons get a group of people to do things that deep down inside they really don’t want to do. I don’t mean that leaders convince people to do the wrong thing. On the contrary. But sometimes people get lazy, or fearful, or a whole host of other things, and they just don’t always want to do what’s best for themselves or the group. It’s at times like these when quality leadership is most important. When the chips are down, and whatever it is you are trying to achieve seems to be impossible, it takes a person of strength and character to guide the group to its intended victory. This is a wonderful thing to witness and be a part of.

Another thing that comes to mind when I contemplate “What is Leadership” is getting a group of people to see things from the leader’s point of view. In life we rarely, if ever, completely see eye to eye with our peers. But when you work in a group setting everyone has to be on the same page. This is mandatory if your intention is to achieve something great. You can’t have even one person in your organization who doesn’t believe in the project. It might get completed, but it just won’t be as special as it would be if the entire group believed in what they are doing. Excellence and unity go together like peas and carrots. And, in order to unify a group, you need a strong leader, or leaders, to head up the cause and convince the rest of the group why it’s so important to believe in the organization’s goals and mission.

When I think about “what is leadership” from a business perspective a few things come to mind that are required of an effective leader. The first is vision. As a business leader, you need to have a strong vision of the direction you want your company or organization to go. Without vision, you are on the slow road to nowhere. And, with vision comes organizational skills. These two attributes go hand in hand in my opinion. You can have all of the vision in the world, but if you can’t figure out a way to turn it into reality, then you honestly have nothing, unfortunately. But please don’t get too stressed out by this. Because an effective leader also knows how to delegate responsibility. So maybe you aren’t the best organizer. So what. As a leader, it’s your job to make sure that you hire the perfect person for the position. Then you can work together and play off of each other’s strengths, and the burden of responsibility will not feel overwhelming.

Although there are other ways to define “What is Leadership,” these, in my opinion, are the key qualities of an effective leader.

What is a Leader?

Being a leader embodies the goodness of man. Leaders have the ability to bring people together, to affect change, and sometimes change the world.

It is this ability to have social influence over others that gives power to a leader. That is what leadership is by definition, having the ability to influence others to follow. In this sense, leadership is an art and possibly a virtue.

Leadership vs. Management

If you walk into any business or organization, you will find people who assume authoritative positions. They may be an assistant manager, division manager, or any other number of titles associated with a person with authority and responsibility. Does this make them a leader?

There is a distinct difference between being a leader and being a manager. Have you ever gone to a convention, social event, a birthday party for example, and noticed one person that stood out among the crowd? I’m talking about someone who others flock too. They are unwittingly attracted to this person; they admire this person, and want to be around this person. They hang on his/her every word and they feel connected to this person.

What I described above is the result of charisma. A charismatic individual has the potential to influence others. Charisma is a personality trait. However, if you weren’t born with charisma, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to develop it.

Leadership stems from passion, management stems from being appointed by an authority. That’s not to say that a manager cannot also be a leader. But, a leader does not control or order people. A leader merely uses his ability to influence others by virtue and action. Leaders set an example and others follow. Managers tell others what to do and they obey because they have to, not because they necessarily want to.

I am not trying to paint management in a bad light. I am merely trying to point out the differences. A manager is an appointed (by an authority) position, a leader is an individual appointed by those who choose to follow that person.

Leadership and Development

Trying to answer the question, “what is leadership?” can be difficult due to the nature of subjectivity and opinion. I don’t view leadership in light of a corporate office.  My thoughts and feelings of leadership go beyond the scope of practicality to include words like passion, intimate, drive, force, and numerous descriptive words that fail to fully acknowledge the gift of leadership.

The art of leadership and the ability to lead can be developed. We will be going down a bit of a different path in this article. The main focus will be on two questions in particular.

Most people just aren’t aware of their innate ability to lead. And they don’t realize that once they step up to the plate and take charge that they can truly change the world if it’s their mission to do so. But you have to cultivate a combination of experience, knowledge and character in order to be an effective leader.

Just by knowing ourselves gives us the ability to make the most of our personal traits that are positive that helpful to those that we come in contact with on a daily basis. Knowing ourselves also allows us to recognize our weaknesses. This is important in regards to leadership because if you don’t know your weaknesses you won’t know what to improve upon and also delegate to others in your organization.

Communication is also another really important thing to cultivate when learning to unleash the leader within. This is a skill possessed by all great leaders in the past and in the present. If you can’t communicate your message clearly and precisely than your ability to lead is greatly diminished. Clear communication is the cornerstone of a great later and necessary in order to keep your followers. You must work on your communication skills diligently to stay on top of the leadership game.

Another fantastic trait required by those looking to unleash the leader within is the ability to learn how to learn effectively. The best way to go about this is to look at the various teaching methods and learning styles available today and see which ones will work best for you and stick with them consistently and regularly.

This way you will be able to stay on top of things in your field and will have a foolproof way of being your best at all times possible. Life is a game of learning. If you want to win that game you must be able to learn new and important things effectively and regularly in order to compete.

By learning how to learn you will also become an excellent teacher. This will make your leadership abilities increase tenfold because you will provide value to the people who follow you daily.
